DAY 1 · MODULE 7
Packet Analysis Fundamentals
Understand layered network data and how packet analyzers help defenders observe traffic.
Understand the concept
Ethernet frame
IP packet
TCP / UDP
DNS
HTTP
Source and destination
Packet filters
Why this matters
Packet analysis connects network theory with what actually crosses the wire and is essential for troubleshooting and incident investigation.

Stage 2 Interactive Lab
Open Interactive LabOperate this concept in a larger realtime simulation and save your practical score.
Perform the activity
- Use the packet-layer visualizer.
- Generate approved ping/DNS traffic in class.
- Identify source, destination and protocol in prepared packet examples.
- Open a provided PCAP later in Wireshark if available.
Workshop safety: Activities involving scanning, web vulnerabilities or security testing must be performed only on the assigned training target or intentionally vulnerable lab.
Read and understand the working example
Packet layers:
Ethernet -> IP -> TCP/UDP -> ApplicationThis example is shown for guided learning. Real host/network execution is reserved for the isolated cyber-range stage.
Prove your understanding
For a prepared DNS packet, identify source IP, destination IP and the application protocol.
